INVERNESS CRAIG DUNAIN 22 MORAY 44
Tue 27th Mar 2012
Moray progressed to the semi-final of the Brin Cup when they defeated Inverness Craig Dunain by 44 points to 22 last Saturday in Inverness.

They took the lead in the 5th minute. Prop Lewis Higgins made good ground after a penalty in the opposing 22, set ball and when the ball was spun wide, wing Richard Woods had enough room to get over the line in the corner. Full-back Andrew McBean’s conversion attempt came up short leaving the score 0-5.

In the 15th minute and against the run of play, Craig Dunain levelled at 5-5, when their Fijian centre scored a solo unconverted try after ball was spilled by the visitors.

From the restart, the Elgin side regained the lead. Prop Ewan White charged into the 22 and set ruck at which the home side strayed offside. Stand-off Chris Clarke quickly took the tap penalty and made the line unopposed. McBean missed the conversion attempt leaving the score 5-10.

Eight minutes later, the Inverness side again levelled the score at 10-10 when again from broken play, another Fijian, this time the wing, scored an unconverted try.

Within two minutes, Moray were back in the lead. A penalty was kicked to touch 5 metres out. A perfectly executed front peel was taken by No 8 Ross Joy and he barged his way over the line for a try out wide. Clarke stepped up to take the conversion but his attempt did not have the legs, leaving the score 10-15.

On the stroke of half-time, the visitors extended their lead. Line-out ball was taken on the ICD 10 metre line and moved to Clarke. He stepped inside his opposite number and ran unopposed to score his second try under the posts. He converted his own try leaving the half-time score Inverness Craig Dunain 10 Moray 22.

In the 52nd minute, Moray scored a fifth try when Joy scored his second of the afternoon. Play progressed to a line-out 5 metres from the line. Clean ball was taken and set. The ball was moved and the big back row barged his way over the line for an unconverted try and a 10-27 lead.

Three minutes later, the lead was extended further when after some slick handling in the backs, Woods scored his second try in the corner. McBean’s attempt narrowly missed leaving the score 10-32.

Moray were in control and were dictating the play.

In the 63rd minute, Joy scored his third after he took a quick penalty, 10 metres from the line, and had the strength to get over the line. This time Clarke narrowly missed the conversion attempt leaving the score 10-37.

In the 70th minute, the Inverness side scored another try, this time from inside their 22, when their three Fijians combined to create the space. The conversion attempt was missed leaving the Moray lead now at 15-37.

From the restart Moray replied when they regained the ball from the kick and spun the ball wide to replacement wing Ewan Simpson, who beat his opposite number to score in the corner. Clarke landed the tricky kick from the touchline for 15-44.

In the final play of the game, the Craig Dunain Fijian wing scored his second try of the afternoon when a mazy run took him through the defence to score under the posts. He converted his own try to leave the final score Inverness Craig Dunain 22 Moray 44.

It had not been Moray’s best performance of the season but they dug deep, worked hard and fully deserved their victory to progress to the semi-final. At this point in time, they do not know who they will face in the semi-final as the other quarter finals are to be played this weekend.

Moray currently don’t have a fixture this Saturday but they do now know that they will be playing against Caledonia League Division 2 Midlands winners St Andrews University (home and away) for the single slot to progress to Caledonia League Division 1. These games are likely to be on April 7th and April 14th.
