MORAY U18’S GLASGOW EMIRATES 7’S TRIP
Thu 10th May 2012
Moray u18’s enjoyed a trip to Glasgow on Saturday to take part in the 7’s tournament and also watch the international team’s fight it out at Scotstoun in the penultimate round of the world 7’s tour.

The Moray lads were drawn against a fancied Ayr team in the first round of the u18 cup and also had to adapt to playing on an artificial 4 G pitch for the first time.

Ayr opened the scoring after winning a scrum on the Moray 22 m and moving the ball quickly wide to their winger who went over out wide for an unconverted try.

Moray quickly replied after winning a scrum on their 10 m line and moving it out to Joe Vickery on the wing who sprinted in from 60 m to score under the posts and tie the match.

Immediately Moray won back possession from the restart and a good drive and offload by Laurie McHutcheon to Vickery gave him his second try which was converted by Cameron Hughes to put the Elgin lads in the lead.

Moray dominated the rest of the game by retaining possession and were unlucky not to score again but for a knock on close to the try line by Sam Morrison who went over his ankle on the unfamiliar surface and had to be replaced by Kieran Rodgers.

The ¼ final saw Moray face a well drilled team for West of Scotland. Moray dominated the early stages but were unable to score and West took advantage with a breakaway try from their 22 which was converted.

Moray replied with a well worked try with the whole team involved in moving the ball around the pitch and stretching the west defence before McCutcheon powered through to score near the posts. Hughes converted to tie the score.

West came straight back at Moray from the kick off and scored again to retake the lead 14-7. The rest of the game saw Moray fight to break out of their own half but a strong West of Scotland outfit were able to contain them and finished the game with an unconverted try.

The Moray lads then took part in the parade of teams around the main stadium in front of 13,000 rugby fans and their artistic efforts to produce a banner for the team were rewarded with a trip to the Scotland v South Africa autumn test for having the best banner on the day.

The rest of the day was spent cheering on Scotland and then Kenya who became the home fans adopted team with their heroic displays and enthusiastic travelling support adding to the carnival atmosphere.

Moray’s squad for the tournament was C Hughes, S Morrison, L McCutcheon, T Jones, K Rodgers, J Cruden, F Haston, J Vickery, C Cameron, R Andrews
