MORAY LOSE OUT TO KINLOSS EAGLES IN THE RBS NORTH REGIONAL BOWL FINAL
Tue 26th Feb 2013
Moray and Kinloss Eagles contested the final of the RBS North Regional Bowl at Morriston last Saturday and following a close and hard fought encounter, the Army side lifted the trophy after a 21 points to 9 victory.

The visitors kicked off and had the majority of the early play, however, in the9th minute, it was Moray who took the lead. The backs were caught offside in their 22 and stand-off Andrew McBean stepped up and landed the penalty for a 3-0 lead.

Kinloss had two opportunities in close succession around the 12th minute tosquare the score but both were from out wide and both were missed.

Five minutes later, the Elgin side were handed a second penalty when the Eagleswere again caught offside in their 22. McBean slotted the kick for 6-0.

The remainder of the half became a battle in midfield with no clear cut opportunities due to some solid and aggressive defending and a number of unforced errors by both sides.

Half time : Moray 6 Kinloss Eagles 0.

In the 48th minute, a penalty to the Elgin side, on the half way, was despatchedto touch, five metres from the line. Clean ball was taken and the forwards drove for the line.

The defence stood strong and so the ball was opened out to the backs. McBean received the ball but was immediately tackled, lifted and dumped and a penalty was given. McBean got up, dusted himself off and landed the kick for 9-0.

Four minutes later, Kinloss closed the gap. Initially they lost their ownline-out, ten metres out from the home line, but pressure saw the clearance kick charged down, the ball regained an a penalty given for offside.

A quick tap was taken and the forwards drove over the line with Aaron Beattie coming up with the score. Tom Best landed the conversion for
9-7.

Moray returned to the offensive and in the 66th minute were attacking the back line on the opposition 22. Rob Cooper seized on a slack pass in midfield, intercepted and ran three quarters the length of the pitch to score the try.

Best landed the conversion to move the Eagles into a 9-14 lead.

The home side had the opportunity to reduce the leeway with a penalty but McBean had to try and force the long kick and pulled it wide.

Moray tried hard to get the try to regain the lead but the Eagles defence was up for it and repelled any attack.

In the 33rd minute, the Elgin side had their best opportunity when they had an overlap and simple hands would have reaped the score but execution was not good and a tackle smothered the ball at outside centre.

In injury time, the Eagles put the result beyond doubt when a driving move took them into the home 22 to a ruck.

Ball was moved from the breakdown and Zack Vakasawaqa came on to the ball at a good angle, broke the defensive line and scored. Best added the two points leaving the final score Moray 9 Kinloss Eagles 21.

A very sizeable crowd had been treated to a hard and good game of rugby.

Congratulations on winning the Bowl go to Kinloss whose defensive effort had been excellent all afternoon. This, along with the way they had capitalised on two mistakes by the home side, set up the win.

Moray, although disappointed, can be proud of the way they competed and made it a great final.
