ABERDEENSHIRE 2NDS 38. MORAY 22
Wed 6th Mar 2013
Moray made the trip to Aberdeenshire 2nds last Saturday, with a young and inexperienced team, and were squeezed out by 38 points to 22.

The Elgin side kicked off this RB S Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture and after 8 minutes took the lead. Several phases of forward play then saw the ball moved to stand-off Jamie Hickey. He chipped the oncoming Shire defence and a kind bounce saw him regain the ball and score the try. He converted his own score for a 0-7 lead.

In the 13th minute, the home side replied with a forward try after a series of rucks around the 5 metre line. The conversion points were added to level the score at 7-7.

Six minutes later, they took the lead. Clean ball was taken at a scrum 5 and the No 8 broke blind. An inside pass opened the defence and the try was scored. The conversion was missed leaving the score at 12-7.

In the 24th minute, Moray added their second try when No 8 Feargus Haston picked up ball at the base of a scrum 5 and made the line down the blindside. The conversion was just outside the reach of Hickey and the game was again tied at 12-12.

Three minutes later, the Aberdeen side retook the lead after a switch in midfield saw the hooker make it under the posts for the score. The conversion points were added to make it 19-12.

In the 30th minute, a Moray scrum was won by the home side and after several phases of play, a try was scored next to posts. The conversion points were added bringing the score to 26-12

Five minutes from half-time, a Shire second row was yellow carded for persistent fouling. Hickey landed the penalty points for 26-15, the half-time score.

Within five minutes of the restart, Moray got themselves back in the game when after several good phases of play in the opposition 22, Haston scored his second try of the day. The conversion was landed by Hickey reducing the lead to 26-22.

In the 50th minute, Shire had a line-out just outside Moray 22. They took the ball and drove 10 metres before opening the ball to the backs which resulted in a try under the posts. The conversion points took the score to 33-22.

The Elgin side tried to respond but in the 65th minute, the Aberdeen side scored the final try of the afternoon. Several phases were played in the 22 before the ball was driven over line and the try scored out wide. The conversion was missed leaving the final score : Aberdeenshire 2nds 38 Moray 22.

Aberdeenshire had deserved heir win but the young Moray side can hold their heads high as they had competed well and were in the game for a good part of the contest.

Moray's next league match is at home against Aberdeen Wanderers on Saturday 16th
March. Kick-off is 3pm.
