ROSS SUTHERLAND 34 MORAY 12
Tue 10th Sep 2013
Moray were beaten 34-12 by Ross Sutherland in Invergordon last Saturday, in their latest RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture.

The Elgin side travelled with a very young side as a number of their experienced players were unavailable.

Ross kicked off and after only 8 minutes opened the scoring. A good handling and driving move up the right flank took them deep into the Moray 22 and pulled in the defence. The ball was then moved quickly wide and the left wing was left to run in the try unopposed. The resulting conversion was landed from the touchline for 7-0.

Within 5 minutes, the home side had stretched the lead. A defending scrum, 10 metres out, was taken against the head and driven by the No 8 to a ruck. With some of the visiting back line out of position, the ball was moved right and the overlap created allowing the right wing to score an unconverted try for a 12-0 lead.

The Elgin side tried to respond but the home side held them out with solid defending.

In a 10 minute purple spell leading up to half time, the Invergordon side added 3 further unconverted tries.

The first two were again created by good driving and popping play by the forwards which took them deep into the visitors half. With defence in disarray, the ball was moved wide in both cases and the overlap created to allow the tries to be scored.

The third try was created from a scrum in their own half. Clean ball was taken up the blind side and moved to the left wing. He went outside his opposite wing and then swerved outside the full-back to score in the corner.

Half time score : Ross Sutherland 27 Moray 0.

Moray went on the offensive from the start of the second half but spilled the ball in the home half. Ross controlled the ball, drove and set up. The ball was moved wide and their dangerous left wing was left too much room and he sped past the defence and scored under the posts. With the conversion points added, the lead was now 34-0.

It was looking very ominous looking for the visitors but the young side started to get themselves more and more into the game. The scrum started to function really well and put the home side under pressure, winning a number of strikes against the head. The backs became a bit more adventurous and started to make inroads into the home defence.

In the 61st minute, they got themselves on the scoreboard. After a period of pressure in the opposition half, they took the ball against the head at a scrum in midfield. The ball was moved quickly to Andrew McBean in the wing position and he scored an unconverted try out wide, leaving the score 34-5.

Moray continued to have the better of the second half and scored a second try, five minutes from time. Good driving play took them up the left wing and deep into the home half. The ball was moved quickly from the breakdown and centre Alex Stronach found the hole in the defence and scored under the posts. McBean added the conversion points for a final score of Ross Sutherland 34. Moray 12.

Ross Sutherland had been worthy of their win after a commanding first half but the young Moray side should be given great credit for the way they faced up and produced a stirring second half performance.

This Saturday Moray are at home and will have a very tough league fixture against Highland. The Inverness side dropped a division last season but have showed their quality with a couple of resounding wins already this term. The Elgin side will be up for it and a great match is expected. Kick-off is 3pm.
