MORAY U18 V MACKIE 26-10-13
Wed 30th Oct 2013
Moray u18’s restarted their league program with a home game against Mackie on Saturday.

In a tough encounter it was the visitors who prevailed but Moray had their chances and but for some indiscipline and better first up tackling could have won the match.

Mackie kicked off and Moray were on the back foot from the start with flanker Sutcliffe yellow carded for a swinging arm. This unsettled the side and Mackie forwards took advantage driving over a quick tap penalty to score an unconverted try out wide.

The visitors extended their lead to 10 points after 10 minutes when they set up several phases in the Moray 22 before moving the ball wide to score a try in the corner.

Moray began to find their feet after this and worked their way into the visitors 22 after a good break by full back Young with good support from winger Beattie. From the line out the Moray forwards poured through on the Mackie 9 and forced a penalty which they used to set a ruck and suck in the defence before moving the ball wide to winger Barcis to score in the corner making it 5-10 after 18 minutes.

After 30 minutes another break by Young opened up the Mackie defence who under pressure won the ball back and broke from deep in their 22. Moray wing Barcis intercepted the ball on half way and with quick thinking broke tackles before offloading to centre Stuart who sped up the blindside and rounded the defence before touching down under the posts giving Gaffney an easy conversion to make it 12-10 to Moray.

The second half continued to be a close affair until after 10 minutes a loose ball from a scrum on half way was picked up by centre Stuart who broke the Mackie midfield defence and went in under the posts for another converted try making it 19-10.

After 20 minutes the visitors were back in the game when they broke the Moray midfield defence and went in under the posts to get back within 2 points. Moray’s cause was not helped when they lost hooker Macrae to the sin bin for backchat.

Moray were kept under pressure by the visitors and a scrum on 5 m after Moray had touched down in goal allowed Mackie to suck in the defence before moving the ball along their back line for a try in the corner to give them a 3 point lead.

Mackie’s fly half followed this up with some deft footwork to sidestep the Moray defence and go over under the posts to extend their lead to 10 points.

To Moray’s credit they came back from this setback and centre Stuart wove his way through the defence only to be stopped 5m short of the line. Mackie went off their feet in the ruck and Moray 2nd row Warren Greaves drove over the tap penalty to get them within 5 points.

Mackie however were not to be denied and finished the game with a try after stealing a Moray lineout in the home 22 and their man of the match no 10 jinked through the Moray defence for an unconverted score making the final score 34-24 for the visitors.

Moray now have to pick themselves up for the away trip to Shetland this weekend.
