MORAY 64 ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY 19
Thu 11th Sep 2014
Moray had a comfortable victory, at home, in their opening match in the BT Caledonia League Division 2 North, defeating Aberdeen University 64 points to 19.

The student’s kicked off and although they had the better of the early exchanges with the home side missing too many tackles, it was Moray who scored first in the 12th minute. The visitors were penalised at a scrum and the three points were neatly converted by full-back Ewan Stuart.

Moray were dominating the scrums and securing good ball in the loose until the 22nd minute when they were turned over in their own half allowing the Aberdeen scrum-half to break strongly and off-load to his outside centre who touched down under the posts. The simple conversion made it 3-7 to the visitors.

The Elgin side responded with another Stuart penalty and in the 29th minute recaptured the lead when from a line-out just inside the student's 22, the ball was shipped wide to lively prop Connor Cameron who forced his way over to make it 11-7.

The home side continued to dominate the second quarter and in the 32nd minute, dynamic flanker Neil Wiseman ran strongly from defence and although well tackled, off-loaded skilfully off the ground to scrum-half Calum Watson for a well taken try near the posts. The successful conversion made the half-time score 18-7 to Moray.

It looked like Moray's domination would continue at the start of the second period. However, in the 43rd minute, a mix up in the home side's mid-field allowed Aberdeen's right winger an unopposed 40 metre sprint to the line. The successful conversion reduced the lead to 18-14.

The home side were quick to respond and only three minutes later, a mazy run by full-back Stuart put centre Joe Macari in at the corner. Stuart duly slotted the difficult conversion for a 25-14 score line.

In the 48th minute it was fine off-loading passage of play in midfield by the home forwards that created Moray's fourth and bonus point try, scored by replacement wing Ewan Simpson. Stuart's conversion made it 32-14 to the home side.

With 53 minutes gone the home forwards again did good work, stealing ball from a line-out near the University goal-line for winger Andrew McBean to score out wide.

At 37-14 down it looked like the students had had enough but they showed their metal by scoring a try which involved some skilful handling from well inside their own half : 37-19.

That proved to be the end of their resistance, however, and Moray completed a successful afternoon with a further four tries. Macari got his second of the afternoon, centre Marc Higgins scored twice and stand-off Cameron Baxter added his first for the club.

Stuart completed an exemplary kicking performance with a penalty and two conversions for a final score of Moray 64 Aberdeen University 19.

The great start to Moray's season continued on from the previous week against a fancied University side. Again the scrummage was strong and handling in the backs was excellent. This Saturday Moray have their first local derby of the season away to RAF Lossiemouth. Kick-off is 3.00pm.
