MORAY 93 STORNOWAY 0
Mon 11th Jan 2016
Moray continued their winning way last Saturday with a comprehensive 93 points to nil home win over Stornoway in their latest BT Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture.

With only 5 minutes on the clock, they opened the scoring. Loose ball was picked up by centre Cameron Renton in his 22 and he broke to the half way line before offloading to full-back Keiran Young who outstripped the defence to score. Wing Callum Wright added the conversion points for a 7-0 lead.

Immediately from the restart, the lead was increased to 12-0. Ball, secured at a ruck, was taken down the blind-side by stand-off Frankie Du Toit and he shipped the ball to Wright who outstripped his opposite wing to score an unconverted try in the corner.

In the 12th minute, the Elgin side stole ball at a ruck deep in the visitors 22. A simple backs 'through the hands' move created the extra man and wing Andrew McBean scored an unconverted try out wide for 17-0.

By the 18th minute, the home team had scored their 4th and the bonus point try. Hooker Marc Higgins ripped the ball at a maul on the half-way line and broke blind. The Stornoway left wing had been dragged into the maul and with no one at home, he made the line for an unconverted try and a 22-0 lead.

Moray were dominating all phases of the game and around the 25 minute mark added three more tries in quick succession.

The first was scored by Du Toit and converted by Wright. A line-out to the islanders, 10 metres from the line, was overthrown and Du Toit reacted the quickest, prodded the ball towards and over the line and made it first for the touchdown.

Wright scored the second and his second of the afternoon when a long pass from Du Toit put him in space to round his opposite number and score an unconverted try out wide.

The third was scored from the restart after prop Marco Taylor gathered the ball, and after a charging run took him to the opposition 22, he offloaded to the supporting Renton who score under the posts. Wright added the conversion points for 41-0.

The final points of the half saw Higgins score his second. Stornoway gathered a kick into their 22 but at the resultant ruck, they lost control of the ball and Higgins picked up and made the line. Wright added the extras for a half-time score of Moray 48 Stornoway 0.

The Elgin side continued at the beginning of the second half as they had in the first and within 8 minutes had added a further two tries.

The first, an unconverted try, was scored by No 8 Neil Wiseman when he was first to get to a McBean grubber to pick up and score.

The second came from a very similar move but this time McBean got his second of the afternoon when he chipped the defence, regathered the ball and scored. He landed the conversion for a 60-0 lead.

In the 65th minute, the home side added another. The forwards set up clean ball at a ruck and a driving and offloading move down the blind- side was finished off by centre Ben Roberts. McBean landed the extra points for 67-0.

Although Moray were in total control, the islanders heads never went down and they continued to work hard in the scrum and in defence.

The Elgin side were relentless, however, and added another two tries in a two minute period around the 65th minute to take the score to 79-0.

The first came after an excellent move in the backs. A loop move by Wright was then turned inside to Du Toit for a straight run in for his second and an unconverted try.

The second saw Jonny Haslam get his name on the scoresheet. Du Toit made a break from inside his own half only to be stopped 10 metres from the line. The ball was quickly recycled to the scrum-half, now playing stand-off and he made it over the line. McBean converted.

In the 71st minute they added another. A charging run by replacement second-row Matthew Lackie was halted just short of the line. Wing-forward Connor Duncan picked up and drove over the line. McBean added the conversion for 86-0.

The final try of the afternoon came in the 78th minute. The home side harried Stornoway in their 22 and got hands on the ball. It was moved quickly to second-row Steven Clark coming at pace and he forced his way over the line. McBean added the conversion for a final score of Moray 93 Stornoway 0.

It had been an excellent display by the Moray side who had been dominant in all aspects of the game and who had run in 15 tries, unanswered. Scrummage again was excellent, line-out was solid but it was in the loose and in attack that the team were clinical.

This Saturday, Moray are away to Inverurie to play second placed Garioch in a BT Caledonia League Division 2 North fixture.
