LOCHABER 6 MORAY 42
Mon 17th Oct 2016
Moray travelled to Fort William last Saturday to play Lochaber in the BT Caledonia League Division 2 North (West), coming away with a pleasing and comprehensive 42-6 victory.

It took the visitors only 6 minutes to take a five point lead when a poor Lochaber clearance kick was fielded by left wing Connor McWilliam. He made good ground before offloading inside to supporting No 8 Neil Wiseman who touched down for an opening unconverted try.

This lead was increased in the seventeenth minute when the home forwards were caught offside at a ruck and McWilliam kicked the three points to make it 8-0 in Moray's favour.

The remainder of the first half was marred by frequent handling errors by both sides and was punctuated by a plethora of penalties, two of which were converted by the home side for a half-time score of Lochaber 6 Moray 8.

The second period transpired to be a completely different spectacle however, beginning with a storming drive deep into Lochaber territory by New Zealand bound Moray flanker Ruaraidh MacKessack-Leitch. He offloaded to centre Harvey Freeman to score in the corner. The missed conversion made the score 6-13.

Four minutes later a penalty to Elgin side was kicked to touch after Lochaber were caught offside. The resulting lineout ball was safely secured and busy No8 Wiseman pounced for his second try. This time Connor McWilliam's conversion sailed between the posts for 6-20.

The fourth, and "bonus point" try was again the result of Lochaber's failure to find touch with a clearing kick. This time it was full-back Andrew McBean who benefitted from McWilliam's inside pass to touch down near the posts. McWilliam again slotted the extra points for 6-27.

In the fifty third minute the home side were penalised for killing the ball in a ruck and Moray flanker Dave Clark carried the ball down the blind side of the resulting lineout for an unconverted try and 6-32.

The middle period of the second half saw the referee issue a flurry of yellow cards, two for the home side and a career first for the visitor's captain, John Westmacott.

It was Moray who made the best of their numerical advantage however, when winger Keiran Young dotted down for an unconverted try after the ball had been spread wide by the back line.

In the last minute of the match, the visitors snatched their seventh try of the afternoon when replacement No 8 Steven Clark picked up the ball from the back of a scrum and drove over the line. Again the conversion was unsuccessful leaving the final score; Lochaber 6 Moray 42.

The Moray forwards had dominated at both scrum and lineout throughout the match but it was the improvement in accuracy and intensity in the second half particularly by Moray's rampant back row that swung the game so dramatically in the visitor's favour.

Moray are at home on League business next Saturday against Ross Sutherland. Kick-off is 3pm.
