MORAY 2ND XV 56 INVERNESS CRAIG DUNAIN 5
Tue 9th Oct 2018
Moray 2nd XV had a convincing home win last Saturday when they defeated Inverness Craig Dunain by 56 points to 5 in a Tennent’s Caledonia North 4 fixture.

The Inverness side kicked off and although all the early pressure was applied by the Moray side, it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 12th minute when an unconverted try was scored following their first foray into the home 22.

The Elgin side returned to the offensive and got their noses in front in the 22nd minute when full-back Lachlan Jones intercepted on the half-way line and his pace took him to a try under the posts.

Stand-off Andrew McBean added the conversion points for a 7-5 lead.

Five minutes later, clean ruck ball around the half-way was moved quickly and Jones came into the line, broke the defence and scored his second, a try converted by McBean for 14-5.

The home scrum was looking very powerful and in the 31st minute following a good scrum and a couple of driving phases, the ball reached centre Connor McWilliam who stepped inside the defence and made the line.

McBean made it 21-5 by adding the conversion points, the half-time score.

Moray scored the fourth and bonus point try early in the second half. A flowing backs move was halted 5 metres from the line but second-row Scott Duncan was on hand to crash his way through the defence to score.

McBean again converted for 28-5.

The home side continued to attack at every opportunity but the Craig Dunain defence stood strong.

In the 65th minute, however, an advancing scrum in the 22 saw the ball picked up and moved blind to replacement centre Marc Higgins and he had the strength to drive over in the corner.

A superb kick from the touch-line by McBean increased the lead to 35-5.

Ten minutes from time, Moray scored two tries in quick succession. The first was created by a strong barging run by second-row CJ Maxtone who in contact passed to McBean who made the line for a try that he converted.

The second came from the restart when following a couple of drives to suck in the defence, the ball was moved wide and Jones stepped past a couple of defenders to score his third of the afternoon.

McBean converted for 42-5.

In the final play of the game, the Elgin side added their eighth try of the afternoon. Good driving play by the forwards was slipped to Maxtone and he had the strength to barge through for the touch-down.

McBean made it a perfect afternoon with his boot by adding his eight conversion for a final score of Moray 2nd XV 56 Inverness Craig Dunain 5.

It had been a very good all-round performance by the team which will give them real confidence. Up front, the scrum was strong but there was also a lot of good driving and continuity play in the loose.

Behind the scrum, the backs looked dangerous with ball in hand and they ran in some excellent tries.

This Saturday Moray 2nd XV are away on league business to Aberdeen Wanderers 2nd XV.

Moray 1st XV return from their lay week for the first local derby league encounter of the season against RAF Lossiemouth at Morriston. Kick-off is 3pm.
