HIGHLAND 2ND XV 48 MORAY 14
Tue 19th Feb 2019
Last Saturday, Moray played their first game in the Tennent's Caledonia League Division 2 North since early December, but were well beaten by league leaders Highland 2nd XV by 48 points to 14.

Moray kicked off against the brisk wind but it was the home team who started the brighter and camped in the opposition half. In the 9th minute, they took the lead at 7-0 when they collected ball at an attacking line, 5 metres out, rolled and drove over for a converted try.

From the restart, they doubled the score when some strong running broke the defence and a simple offload created the space to score.

Moray played their way into the game and some good driving and handling play took them into the home 22. A couple of good scoring opportunities were created but unfortunately some inaccuracies coupled with solid home defence meant they did not make it over the line.

Highland weathered the pressure and added two more tries in a three minute spell around the half-hour mark through quick and direct back play which the visitors found hard to defend against. This stretched the lead to 26-0.

On the stroke of half-time, the Elgin side did get over the goal-line but the try was disallowed as it was called a double movement.

Moray started the second half brightly and in the 44th minute opened their account. A speculative chip through was chased up by full-back Lachlan Jones and when the defender delayed waiting for the ball to cross the dead-ball line, the 15 managed to reach out a touch down for the score. Stand-off Rory Millar added the conversion points for 26-7.

The Elgin side tried hard to use the wind and add to their tally but the Highland defence stood firm.

The home side ran the ball at all opportunities and their elusive and speedy backs found gaps and punished the opposition defence by scoring three further tries in the next 20 minutes to extend the score to 43-7.

The Moray heads never went down and in the 77th minute, they scored a second try. A passage of good driving play took them deep into the 22 and to a ruck just short of the line. Replacement back-row Will Davidson picked up and drove over to score. Millar added the conversion points for 43-14.

In the final minute of the game, a defensive line-out on the Moray 5 metre, was loosely tapped back and a Highland player was quickest to react and got to the ball to score an unconverted try for a final score of Highland 48 Moray 14.

It had been a hard afternoon for the Moray side who, after a long period of inactivity in the league, had come up against a very strong, quick and well-organised Highland side who are playing good rugby and are worthy league leaders.

This Saturday, Moray are away from home again on league business at RAF Lossiemouth.
