MORAY 21 KINLOSS 11
Sat 11th Oct 2008
A bruising local derby at Morriston last Saturday, saw Moray edge out Kinloss by 21 points to 11, to move to the top of the Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia League Division 2 (North West).

The home side kicked off and immediately took the game to the opposition by trying to play an expansive and quick tempo game. The Kinloss side, however, were fired up for the game and in the opening plays were physical and strong in defence.

In the 15th minute, the Elgin side took the lead when stand-off Lee Millar landed a penalty after the visitors handled at the bottom of a ruck.

Seven minutes later, it was all square when Gary Banford landed a penalty after Moray were caught offside after some poor passing gifted the visitors the ball in the 22.

From the restart, the home side turned over the ball in the Kinloss 22 and quick hands moved the ball wide allowing wing Rob Collie to score out wide. Millar slotted a very difficult kick to take the score to 10-3.

For the next quarter of an hour, good defensive play by both sides kept the ball firmly in midfield.

In the 40th minute, the visitors chipped the ball through to the 22 where full-back Marika Lavelawa Tivitivi collected the ball. He decided to run which was the wrong option and very quickly was closed down and the ball stolen. With the defence in disarray, the ball was moved wide and an unconverted try scored out wide, reducing the score to 10-8.

Moray restarted with half time fast approaching and were awarded a penalty on the 10 metre line for over the top at a ruck. A quick tap was taken and when Kinloss failed to retreat to an onside position, another penalty was given. The posts were now in range and Millar calmly slotted the kick for a 13-8 half time lead.

Within 3 minutes of the second half getting under way, the visitors were awarded a penalty when the referee adjudged Moray to have held the ball on the ground. Banford landed the kick for 13-11.

The home side returned to the attack and threatened the Kinloss line. Captain and No 8 Craig Forster made it over the line but in the tackle, knocked on the ball and the chance was gone.

Five minutes later, however, they did score a try. Clean ball was taken at the line on the halfway and spun out the back line. Tivitivi entered the line between outside centre and wing, broke a couple of tackles and made it to the line. Millar’s conversion attempt landed wide leaving the score 18-11.

In the 65th minute, Moray were handed an opportunity to extend the lead when a high tackle was given in the 22. Millar pulled his kick wide to leave Kinloss within a converted try.

Five minutes short of the full time whistle, the home side handed their opponents a great field position when a pass back into the 22 was despatched directly to touch. With a change in the laws this year, a scrum was awarded at the point from where the ball was kicked. In this case it was 5 metres out from the goal line. Kinloss tried hard to capitalise on the mistake but sound defence thwarted the attempts and in fact forced a penalty allowing the clearance.

With the final whistle looming, Moray secured the game when Millar landed a penalty from 40 metres out after a high tackle offence.

Final score : Moray 21 Kinloss 11

It had been a hard and bruising game and Kinloss should be given credit for upping their game against an ‘in form’ Moray side. Up front, the home side were on top in the scrum and the back row was immense around the pitch. Behind the scrum, the visitors put the Elgin lads under pressure and attacking moves did not quite click as they have done in the last few weeks.

This Saturday (18th), Moray are away to Inverness on league business and play Craig Dunain. The next home game is the following week (25th) with another local derby, this time against RAF Lossiemouth.
