ROSS SUTHERLAND 19 MORAY 0
Thu 24th Nov 2011
Ross Sutherland got revenge for the defeat they suffered at Moray’s hands earlier in the season when they won the RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 2 North fixture at Invergordon last Saturday by 19 points to nil.

From the kick off, the Ross side took the game to their opponents but were kept in check by some good defence. Moray forced their way into the home 22 in the 7th minute but after some strange refereeing decisions and good defence, the opportunity was gone.

This set the general tone for the first half hour of the game, with defences on top but with the home side having more of the opportunities.

In the 32nd minute, Ross took the lead. The Elgin side had the put in at a scrum in their 22 but lost it against the head. The ball was moved quickly to the blind and the blind side flanker was at hand to take the inside pass and score an unconverted try for a 5-0 lead. This turned out to be the only score of the first half.

Ross started the second half as brightly as they had the first and in the first 10 minutes had forced two penalties both of which they missed.

Their pressure told in the 52nd minute when they scored a second try. A move was started from inside their own half and finished off when the stand off grubbered the ball towards the goal line and the inside centre followed up to score a converted try and a 12-0 lead.

Moray tried to respond but the home defence was well organised and was having a good day.

In the 74th minute, with the Elgin side pushing hard to get back into the game, Ross scored a third try against the run of play. An attacking move in the home 22 broke down in the backs and the Invergordon side quickly moved the ball to their very pacey left wing. With only full back to beat, he chipped the ball and then regained it and ran it in for a converted try and a 19-0 lead.

This concluded the scoring for the afternoon with Ross Sutherland deserving their win. They had been excellent in defence all afternoon, dealt well with anything that Moray had thrown at them, had looked dangerous with ball in hand and had made the most the opportunities presented to them.

This Saturday, Moray are on the road again, this time to the central belt, and play Grangemouth Stags in the quarter final of the RBS Caledonia Regional Bowl. This will be a very tough fixture as the Stags sit top of RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 2 Midlands.
