STORNOWAY 17 MORAY 10
Thu 18th Oct 2012
Last weekend Moray made the long journey by land and sea to Lewis to play Stornoway in their latest RBS Caledonia League 2 North match.

The calm waters of the Minch did not prepare this young side for the fiery welcome which they received from their lowly placed hosts, Stornoway having failed to gain a point in the league thus far.

Within 13 minutes, following a poor clearance kick, Moray found themselves 7 points down when Stornoway’s stand-off broke clear and put his centre in under the posts.

The islanders followed this strong start with a series of missed penalty kicks and a clear try scoring opportunity when their no. 4 dropped the ball over the goal line.

Just before half time another missed touch finder let Stornoway’s no. 10 drop a goal to make the score at the break 10 – 0 to Stornoway.

The second half began with numerous mistakes from both sides and in the 58th minute, the home side were penalised for handling on the ground. Full back Andrew McBean elegantly slotted the kick from 40 metres to make the score 10 – 3.

It was clear that much of Moray’s problems lay in the link between scrum half and stand-off, and when experienced Aled Herbert took over the no.9 role there was a marked improvement in their attacking play.

However, it was Stornoway who scored next when McBean was caught in possession 25 metres out, and from the subsequent ruck, the ball was moved to Stornoway’s “man-of –the-match” stand-off who scored under the posts. An easy conversion made the score 17 -3.

The visitors lost winger Sean Keenan in the 70th minute when he left the field to have a nasty head wound attended to.

Moray pressure in the last 5 minutes resulted in a series of penalties close to the home line with the referee issuing two yellow cards for repeated Stornoway misdemeanours, and it was against the 13 men that Moray finally scored a try when Connor Cameron forced his way over.

Stornoway were not to be denied their win however and they were worthy winners by 17 – 10.

This Saturday, there is a local derby at Morriston when RAF Lossiemouthvisit. These encounters are hard and physical and kick off is 3pm. Prior to the league match, there is a P6/7 match at 2pm between Moray and Kinloss. The youngsters would really like to show off their skills to a good crowd.
