RAF LOSSIEMOUTH 12 MORAY 11
Tue 22nd Oct 2013
RAF Lossiemouth narrowly defeated Moray, by 12 points to 11, in their first RBS Caledonia League Division 2 North local derby of the season in a hard fought encounter at the camp.

The Elgin side kicked off and were first to put points on the board in the 8th minute. Andrew McBean landed a penalty for 0-3 after the home scrum half held on to the ball on the deck on his 10 metre line.

Three minutes later, the fliers No 10, Chris Clarke, had the opportunity to level the score but his penalty attempt came back off the upright.

In the 15th minute, Moray were pinged for over the top at a ruck. Clarke kicked to touch, 5 metres out. The line was taken and a drive took them over the line but the defence got under the ball to thwart the score. The visitors took the ball at the resultant scrum and cleared their lines.

Ten minutes later, the Elgin side breached into the 22 and were awarded a penalty when the home side infringed at the ruck. McBean stepped up and landed the kick for a 0-6 lead.

Lossie started to get the upper hand in the scrum and give the visiting front row a bit of a difficult time. Late in the half, they had two good opportunities in the opposition 22 but good solid defence held them out leaving the half time score, RAF Lossiemouth 0 Moray 6.

Within four minutes of the start of the second half, the home side had reduced the lead. Moray conceded a penalty in front of the posts and Clarke landed the kick for 3-6.

The Elgin side had a good opportunity in the 50th minute when they attacked in the home 22 but good defence stemmed the final drive and forced them into touch a metre out. The home side took clean ball at the line and cleared.

Seven minutes later a move, started in their 22, took the Lossie side into the opposition 22 and when the visitors infringed, a penalty was signalled. Replacement scrum half Chris Lomas stepped up and landed the penalty from 30 metres out to level the score at 6-6.

In the 63rd minute the home side took the lead at 9-6 when Clarke dropped a goal after a forward drive into the 22.

Six minutes later, after trying to run from their own 22, the Moray side were penalised for diving over the ball. The attempt by Lomas hit the right hand upright but ricocheted over the bar for a 12-6 lead.

The Elgin side responded well, drove into the home half and were awarded a penalty when the ball was handled on the deck, 35 metres out. McBean attempt was dragged wide leaving the fliers with their six point advantage.

Moray continued to press and in the 78th minute, after a drive towards the line, the ball was moved wide and full back Ryan Anderson drifted past the defence to score. The pressure was all on McBean as the conversion points would more than likely win the game. The home side rushed the kick and the attempt was pulled leaving the score at 12-11.

The visitors had one last chance when they secured the restart ball but aggressive tackling by the Lossie defence turned the ball over, securing the 12-11 victory for the home side.

It had been a very even and hard fought encounter with an abundance of hard hitting tackling, all you would expect of a local derby.

This Saturday, Moray are at home when Aberdeen Wanderers visit on league business. Kick off is 3pm.
