MORAY 1ST XV 45 RAF LOSSIEMOUTH 0
Tue 13th Feb 2018
Moray 1st XV were convincing 45 points to nil winners in the BT Caledonia League Division 2 North local derby against RAF Lossiemouth last Saturday.

The RAF side kicked-off but it was the home side that took the game into the danger zone early on and were awarded a penalty on the 22 after an offside at a ruck. Full-back Callum Wright stepped up and landed the penalty for a 3-0 lead.

In the 9th minute, they extended their lead. Play progressed to a ruck, 25 metres out and when the opposition No 8 held back scrum-half Callum Watson, a penalty was awarded. Wright put his kick between the posts for 6-0.

Three minutes later, Wright landed another penalty, this time for a high tackle, to take the score to 9-0.

The next fifteen minutes or so saw both sides offensively have a go at each other but defences stood strong.

In the 28th minute, however, the Elgin side stretched their lead. Play had progressed into the RAF 22 but a penalty was awarded when Moray strayed offside.

The kick did not make touch and was fielded by Wright who immediately returned an ‘up and under’ and a chase ensued. In attempting to field the ball, it was knocked on and wing Lewis Scott was quickest to react, scooped up the ball and ran in the try. Wright converted taking the score to 16-0.

Four minutes from half-time, the home side scored a second try. A penalty was awarded for offside and the ball kicked to an attacking line, 5 metres out.

Clean ball was taken and a driving maul set but defended well. Prop Mark Taylor, who had ball in hand, rolled blind off the back of the maul and bulldozed over for the score. Wright landed the kick from out wide for 23-0, the half-time score.

Within a minute of the restart, the home side had stretched their lead to 26-0 when Wright landed another penalty when Lossie went over the top at a ruck.

Three minutes later, the visitors had a chance to get themselves on the board when a penalty was awarded in the 22 for hands in the ruck but the stand-off pulled his kick wide.

In the 55th minute, the RAF side were attacking in the home half but a pass was knocked on and replacement wing Andrew McBean put his boot on the ball and the resulting chase saw him catch the full-back and force him to offload.

A boot was put to the ball to clear the danger but centre Connor McWilliam was up in support and he charged down the kick, collected the ball and made the line for the score. Wright converted for 33-0.

The bonus point try came in the 29th minute after Moray had progressed to an attacking line-out, 5 metres out. Clean ball was taken, the ball moved quickly to Marc Higgins going blind and he had the power to crash through two defenders and score an unconverted try in the corner for 38-0.

The home side added a final try in the final minute of the game. After a period of attacking play in the RAF 22, an off-side penalty was awarded. A quick tap was taken and quickly moved to Marc Higgins coming back at pace on the angle and he had the strength to brush aside three tackles to score by the posts.

Wright added the conversion points for a final score of Moray 45 RAF Lossiemouth 0.

Local derbies with Lossie are always hard-fought encounters and this was no exception but it had been an excellent all-round display from the Moray side and they were worthy winners.

The efforts of the forwards should be highlighted as their dominance in the scrum provided a great platform for the win.

This Saturday, Moray have another home league fixture, this time against Aberdeen University Medics. Kick-off is 3pm.
